These resources were developed for residents in communal living settings such as assisted living facilities, lodges and long term care or for older adults attending day programs. The program can be presented by the recreation director or staff, students enrolled in health related fields, family members or volunteers.
The objective of the program is to raise awareness about the importance of handwashing in preventing the spread of infections. This is particularly important in group settings where many objects are shared. Proper handwashing reduces rates of infections and the need for antibiotics, and prevents the development of antimicrobial resistance.
This information may also be helpful for caregivers and families. The introduction includes tips on presenting to older persons, and what to expect when you go to a communal living facility.
For teaching provided in BC, please complete a teaching documentation form and email to us so that we may credit you for participating and use the information to evaluate the program.
